Hearts is the classic four-player trick-taking card game built around evasion and risk calculation. Rather than fighting to take every trick, your primary objective is to dodge penalty cards: every card in the Hearts suit adds one point to your score, while the dreaded Queen of Spades inflicts a punishing thirteen points. Because the player with the lowest score at the end of the match wins, every hand demands careful attention to what your opponents discard.
A full round moves quickly against three computer opponents. After receiving your thirteen cards and making your strategic passes, the player holding the two of Clubs opens play. From there, tension builds on every trick. You must follow suit if possible, meaning high cards become serious liabilities once an opponent runs out of a suit and begins dumping point cards on your pile. However, high-risk players can attempt the ultimate reversal by shooting the moon: capturing all twenty-six penalty points in a single round to penalize every rival.
On Retro Bowl, Hearts offers a thoughtful, low-stress change of pace. If you want a break from managing football rosters and timing touchdown passes, a few hands of cards deliver immediate tactical satisfaction with zero setup required.
How to play
Gameplay follows traditional Hearts rules using a standard 52-card deck without jokers:
- Opening trick: The player with the two of Clubs leads the first trick. No penalty cards (Hearts or the Queen of Spades) can be played on trick one unless a player has no other cards.
- Following suit: Players must play a card of the led suit if they have one. If you have no cards in that suit, you may discard any card in your hand.
- Winning tricks: The highest card of the led suit takes the trick. There is no trump suit in Hearts. The winner of the trick leads the next round.
- Breaking hearts: Hearts cannot be led until hearts have been broken by someone discarding a Heart on a trick where they could not follow suit.
- Scoring and winning: When all thirteen tricks are completed, points are tallied. The match continues until a player crosses the point ceiling (typically 100 points), and the player with the fewest total points claims victory.
Tips for lower scores
- Void a suit early: Discarding all your cards from a single suit gives you an escape hatch. Once voided, you can safely offload dangerous high cards whenever someone leads that suit.
- Protect your high Spades: Holding the Ace or King of Spades is perilous if you do not hold the Queen. Try to exhaust opponents' Spades safely before someone drops the Queen on your high cards.
- Count the Spades and Hearts: Keep track of whether the Queen of Spades has been played and how many Hearts remain so you know when high cards in other suits are safe to lead.
- Defend against moon shots: If you notice one opponent taking every trick and gathering all the penalty cards, intentionally win a trick or feed a safe non-point card to disrupt their sweep.

Questions about Hearts
Is Hearts unblocked at school?
Hearts runs in an ordinary browser tab from retrobowlpoki.com, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.
How do you win a game of Hearts?
The goal is to finish with the lowest score. You earn penalty points by collecting Hearts (one point each) and the Queen of Spades (13 points). Rounds continue until a player reaches the score threshold, usually 100 points, at which point the player with the fewest points wins.
What does shooting the moon mean in Hearts?
Shooting the moon happens when a single player wins every single penalty card in a round—all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades. Instead of receiving 26 penalty points, that player scores zero while every opponent receives 26 points.
Can you lead with a Heart on the first trick?
No. The player holding the two of Clubs must lead the opening trick, and point cards cannot be discarded on the first trick. Hearts cannot be led in later tricks until hearts are broken by someone discarding a Heart on an off-suit trick.
Does Hearts work on mobile devices and Chromebooks?
Yes. The game runs directly in any modern desktop or mobile web browser using tap or mouse controls, without requiring any app installations or accounts.
